Negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia over Preah Vihear have stumbled over the spelling of the name of the famed ancient temple.
A Thai official said yesterday officials of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission were trying to find a way around the problem so border negotiations could proceed.
Vasin Teeravechyan, who chairs the commission, said a solution acceptable to the two countries would be found.
Thailand insists on using “the Temple of Phra Viharn-Preah Vihear” on documents used in the negotiations. Cambodian officials strongly object, saying Preah Vihear is internationally accepted.
Mr Vasin, who is a retired Foreign Ministry official, said the name proposed by Thailand was very common in international negotiations on the issue.
The Temple of Phra Viharn-Preah Vihear has been approved by parliament for the framework negotiations with Cambodia. Thailand will use it in documents to be signed with Cambodia.
The meeting will be concluded today.
The two countries have been unable to settle on a plan to reduce troops in the disputed area which covers 4.6 square kilometres between Kantharalak district in Si Sa Ket and the Cambodian province of Preah Vihear.
Mr Vasin refused further comment on the issue. But earlier he said Cambodia had told the meeting it had no soldiers stationed in the area.
The Cambodia delegation is led by Senior Minister Var Kim Hong.
Despite the disagreement over the name of the temple, the two countries will set up another team to survey the borderline for demarcation between Nam Yuen district in Ubon Ratchathani and Phu Sing district in Si Sa Ket, which is 195km long.
Thailand and Cambodia have already formed a survey team to study the disputed area near the ancient temple which was the scene of a military clash last year.
A plan to reduce the number of soldiers near the disputed area is expected to be included in talks when Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan visits Phnom Penh on Friday.

Evidently, Cambodian NEVER heard the word ‘Prah Viharn”, that’s for Ah Thai languages. Cambodia will NOT agree and recognize ‘Prah Viharn’. Sorry Thailand. Previously, Thailand was Cambodia and you can see All temples in Thailand, they all Khmer architecture, Khmer arts. Thai refused not to recognize who their ancestors were. Base on the actual History between Cambodia and Thailand, Thai teaches their young generation not to learn the truth history of Thailand.
It’s a smart move for Thailand, and it would be a cut blood flow to the brain for Cambodia, if Cambodia is dump enough to except. All legal battles in the past would be over turned. This mean the name Preah Vihear is no long exist. The name Phra Viharn- Preah Vihear would now become something else that Thailand can claim the legitimacy over. Whatever has been ruled by the International Court of Justice would be no longer valid. It’s like a woman is marrying to a man that her last name will be his, and very thing will be jointed.

I just wonder why Cambodian leaders continue to discuss with Siem about Preah Vihear temple? The temple already registered as world heritage. Siem foreign minister iteself also agreed. I think Cambodia leader should forecast on 4.6 km rather than talk about Preah Vihear.
I think that cambodia do not accept any siem name of khmer temple. All the international organization recognize only PREAH VIHEAR.
Thais, you can change your identity from Tai to Siam and from Siam to Thai to forget your past of losing your Tai root and race to the Mongol and your losing Siam root and race to the Burmese. But Preah Vihear never loses its Khmer root.
You can screw up your own Tai and Siam root and race but you can’t screw up Khmer root and race!!!

Tell the Tais to go back to China, go back to being Chinese Minority. Preah Vihear is not built by them. Preah Vihear is not available for bargaining. It is ours and even the international court approved it.
Being as cambodian people I don’t want any sides to have a problem but thai really claimed to preahvihear as their own heritage and tried to invade again and again also they caused. attacks over our soldiers causing deaths. I just want to ask why the international court has taken any action yet? Why they didn’t punish thai for their invasion? Yes it is not good if we make war cause it will cause a great damage and we also really don’t want beacause we are so experienced and know very well aboutit.

I have read some of documents prepared by thai government to teach their people from generation to generation like this clearly tell us about their ambition want to swallow our Preavihea.
So far as I know thai people so bad and very proud of their people and their country and the thing that they inherited from their ancestors is the idea of invasion germinated from birth which no one can remove this.
Seeing our government leading by our prime minister Hun sen with a firm and strong policy We all now feel relieved als I saw our strong spirit of our soldiers are working so hard to defend our land territory saying that: they will not make even a tip of finger of our land loss or miss and also will not invade them.

Ce site archéologique du temple Preah Vihear est une preuve indéniable, infalsifiable de l’histoire de l’Empire Khmer. Il appartient au peuple khmer, les bâtisseurs des temples sur cette terre depuis des siècles alors que les thais n’existaient pas encore, qu’ils étaient à Nan Chao.
La preuve comme quoi, la thailande veut s’approprier de la culture khmère.
Si le cambodge céderait à la demande thaie, il (Cambodge) n’aura qu’à vendre son âme au diable!!
On n’a pas à négocier avec la thailande.
Ce site fait parti du territoire cambodgien. Vous êtes légitimes et maitre de votre destin.
Il suffit de créer un comité des frontières, en demande de l’aide à la France et à l’instance internationale pour être reconnu, en adoptant les tracées qui ont été conclus entre la France (protectorat) et le siam au début du 19è siècle.
C’est aussi simple que ça !!
