Negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia over Preah Vihear have stumbled over the spelling of the name of the famed ancient temple.
A Thai official said yesterday officials of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission were trying to find a way around the problem so border negotiations could proceed.
Vasin Teeravechyan, who chairs the commission, said a solution acceptable to the two countries would be found.
Thailand insists on using “the Temple of Phra Viharn-Preah Vihear” on documents used in the negotiations. Cambodian officials strongly object, saying Preah Vihear is internationally accepted.
Mr Vasin, who is a retired Foreign Ministry official, said the name proposed by Thailand was very common in international negotiations on the issue.
The Temple of Phra Viharn-Preah Vihear has been approved by parliament for the framework negotiations with Cambodia. Thailand will use it in documents to be signed with Cambodia.
The meeting will be concluded today.
The two countries have been unable to settle on a plan to reduce troops in the disputed area which covers 4.6 square kilometres between Kantharalak district in Si Sa Ket and the Cambodian province of Preah Vihear.
Mr Vasin refused further comment on the issue. But earlier he said Cambodia had told the meeting it had no soldiers stationed in the area.
The Cambodia delegation is led by Senior Minister Var Kim Hong.
Despite the disagreement over the name of the temple, the two countries will set up another team to survey the borderline for demarcation between Nam Yuen district in Ubon Ratchathani and Phu Sing district in Si Sa Ket, which is 195km long.
Thailand and Cambodia have already formed a survey team to study the disputed area near the ancient temple which was the scene of a military clash last year.
A plan to reduce the number of soldiers near the disputed area is expected to be included in talks when Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan visits Phnom Penh on Friday.

I just wanted to reply the answer to the question of “Phnom Penh Post” of why Thailand is vexed of discussion over the issue of the Preah Vihear temple at the International forum:
1) Thailand will be ashamed of the foreign envoys if the Preah Vihear issue is discussed at the UN level, because of its encroachment to the land of Cambodia for several decades ago along the border ranging from Preah Vihear to Pursat and from Pursat to Koh Kong. Specifically, Cambodia has lost so much land to the intruders of Thais. For example, like Ta Maun Toch, Ta Maun Thom and Ta Maun itself in the Oddor Meancheay Province.
2) If the issue is discussed at the International level, not only the vicinity land of Preah Vihear would the current Thai government voluntarily hands back to Cambodia, but more land and Khmer ancient temples along the border that Thailand must return to Cambodia such as at Nong Chan, Banteay Ampil and at Buriram as the Prasat Muang Tam, Phimai and Phnom Rung.
3) If the international bodies found out that previous Thai government as well as the current one had/has intentionally curved a big chunk of the Khmer land in the past and at this present day, the foreign tourists would not dare to travel to this “Smile Land” as Thais called it.
BURNING ISSUE!!!!!!!!! Attention to the Cambodian government: Thailand’s stratagem of its normalization the relations to Cambodia at this present time is because it desperately wants Cambodia to avoid the discussion of the Preah Vihear issue with Ban Ki Moon, the chair of UN at his upcoming visit to Cambodia on Oct this month. I clearly advise all Cambodian representatives that the border issue must be discussed, so that the “Preah Vihear” management plan should be proceeded and ready at the next year meeting at Bahrain 2011. To normalize the relation with Thailand at this present time which mean that our neighboring country premeditatedly wants to bilaterally discuss the border with Cambodia and avert the Cambodian government to put the Preah Vihear issue at the International forum, either with ASEAN, UN SECURITY COUNCILs and with the Secretary General: Ban Ki Moon. The more Cambodia has chosen its decision for bilateral negotiation with Thailand, the most our neighboring country will take advantage on the border issue and most likely that the fomentation from neighbor would create endless problem.
CAMBOIDIA is not a “Land of Smile”, but one of the “Seven Wonders of the World that has countless ancient edifices including SAMBOR PREI KOK, ANGKOR WAT AND PREAH VIHEAR temple.

Dear Mr. Great_man i dont think what you have said is true . Im not the supporter of the Thai current Govt but iam rather confident that our government doesnt want to make a war with Cambodia in order to make thai people forget the politic problems. Nationalism is the reason why our both countries still have disputes about this hot issue , we never trust in each other . Asean is not important as the benefits of the both countries. why dont you open ur mind a little bit to learn in deep root about this problem instead of saying your opinion which is rekless and untrue.
of course war is going to ruin us both not only Thailand and Cambodia, our people who lived near the border.

Thailand leader will continue to invade cambodia:
1-to show thai people that they can invade cambodia successfully. Althought they knew that the geography will let thai troops die easily.
2- to take popularity from thai people back. By make thai people angry with cambodian( Germen in world war II). To combine thailand.
3- to calm down red thai. And let them forget thai problem.
4- to invade cambodia.
