Negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia over Preah Vihear have stumbled over the spelling of the name of the famed ancient temple.

A Thai official said yesterday officials of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission were trying to find a way around the problem so border negotiations could proceed.

Vasin Teeravechyan, who chairs the commission, said a solution acceptable to the two countries would be found.

Thailand insists on using “the Temple of Phra Viharn-Preah Vihear” on documents used in the negotiations. Cambodian officials strongly object, saying Preah Vihear is internationally accepted.

Mr Vasin, who is a retired Foreign Ministry official, said the name proposed by Thailand was very common in international negotiations on the issue.

The Temple of Phra Viharn-Preah Vihear has been approved by parliament for the framework negotiations with Cambodia. Thailand will use it in documents to be signed with Cambodia.

The meeting will be concluded today.

The two countries have been unable to settle on a plan to reduce troops in the disputed area which covers 4.6 square kilometres between Kantharalak district in Si Sa Ket and the Cambodian province of Preah Vihear.

Mr Vasin refused further comment on the issue. But earlier he said Cambodia had told the meeting it had no soldiers stationed in the area.

The Cambodia delegation is led by Senior Minister Var Kim Hong.

Despite the disagreement over the name of the temple, the two countries will set up another team to survey the borderline for demarcation between Nam Yuen district in Ubon Ratchathani and Phu Sing district in Si Sa Ket, which is 195km long.

Thailand and Cambodia have already formed a survey team to study the disputed area near the ancient temple which was the scene of a military clash last year.

A plan to reduce the number of soldiers near the disputed area is expected to be included in talks when Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan visits Phnom Penh on Friday.

They are not Thai says a general

Preah Vihear, Cambodia – A Cambodian commander said on Thursday his country had released 13 Thai soldiers who surrendered during a deadly border shoot-out, although Thailand denies they were ever in custody.

Major General Srey Deok, commander of Cambodian troop operations in the disputed border area, said they had agreed to release the Thai soldiers after talks on Thursday with senior Thai military officials.

“We handed their weapons back to them already,” Srey Deok said, adding that the troops had been released and allowed to walk around the disputed area.

Thailand, however, has maintained that NONE of their troops were captured by Cambodia.

“They are not Thai,” said Lieutenant General Wiboonsak Neeparn, Thailand’s north-eastern army commander, after the meeting with Cambodian officials.

Two Cambodian soldiers were killed and several troops wounded on both sides when fighting broke out Wednesday on disputed land near an 11th century Khmer temple, a UN World Heritage site on Cambodian territory.

Cambodia and Thailand have been sparring over land near the temple since July, and tensions soared this week after about 80 Thai troops entered a disputed area, enraging Cambodia.

note: some people believe the article is fake.  I guess South Africa must have faked this news too, since they posted it here.  The Thai military also denied their own Thai media access to their front line.  As a result, Thai media can only report what they hear from the generals.

  2. Duke Said,

Hey they can pass for Cambodian, I think most Thais and cambodias share the same features….. Dark and slim…

  3. admin Said,

Not just the same features, but similar language and culture. Too bad this had to happen.

Back in the old days, a college friend of mine, Pongvarin Chaiaset, who happens to be Thai was all gung ho about defending Asians from racism by White students. We had fliers and e-mail protest against Dennys restaurant, because they mistreated foreign, Asian students.

Pong has since returned to Thailand. I lost contact with him many years ago. I hope you are well, my friend.

“They are not Thai,” said Lieutenant General Wiboonsak Neeparn, Thailand’s north-eastern army commander, after the meeting with Cambodian officials.[quote]

This is an example of fake news from a Cambodian website. AFP official site never reports Wiboonsak as saying such a remark. Cambodians has become victims of their own media who feed them with twisted facts and fabricated stories. Without a smarter population, Cambodia will never prosper.

  5. admin Said,

I guess the Bangkok post is fake news too. They denied any surrender by Thai troops.

Soldier says they are not detained by Cambodian troops but are working with them, Wassana Nanuam and Reuters report

One of the 10 Thai soldiers reported to have surrendered to Cambodian troops during Wednesday’s border skirmishes yesterday denied they had been detained. He said the team was a communications unit coordinating with a similar Cambodian unit, and they were still working freely in the disputed area.

”We are not being detained. We did not surrender,” Apichart Pupuak told Reuters by telephone from the shrine on Preah Vihear.

Capt Apichart said he was a member of the team that had been stationed at the Keo Sikha Kiri Svara chedi near Preah Vihear for three months liaising with Cambodian troops on communication matters.

Under the agreement with Cambodia, 10 soldiers from each country stay at the chedi, in the 4.6-square-kilometre disputed area. Another 20 are stationed there for joint patrolling.

Capt Apichart said pictures of him waving his hands without weapons were taken by Cambodian photographers. But he said he was gesturing to tell troops from both sides stationed at the shrine not to shoot after they heard gunshots.

”That wasn’t a surrender sign. I waved one arm to the Thai troops and to the Cambodians to hold their fire,” he said.

The Thai soldiers had not been disarmed by the Cambodian troops as claimed by Phnom Penh.

”We have been asked not to carry weapons around at the shrine, but all our rifles and other weapons are still with us,” he said.

”They are treating us well. We drank coffee and watched news on TV together last night,” he added.

He said after his request for both sides to hold fire, Cambodian troops ”helped us carry the wounded Thai soldiers out”.

The two countries also keep soldiers in other spots in the disputed area, but they do not stay together like the units at the chedi.

Troops said the previously cordial relations between Cambodian and Thai soldiers in other parts of the disputed area had changed, as Thai soldiers now had to watch their backs.

”I have to be extra careful. They might go mad or retaliate for the death of two Cambodian soldiers,” said Sgt-Maj Jongrak Tanhom, who is stationed in the overlapping area.

”The fear added to the chilly weather and heavy rain keeps me alert at night.

”I told them [Cambodian soldiers] that I don’t want to wage a war and shoot at soldiers I have befriended. But when duty calls, they have their duties to attend to and I have mine.”

The tension ran high after a gunfight broke out on Wednesday at Phu Ma Khua and Pha Mor E Daeng in Si Sa Ket’s Kantharalak district. The battle left two Cambodian soldiers dead.

  12. Give Cambodia A Break Said,

Under my eyes the Thais are a bunch of lady boys no more, no less. Let face it, throughout this temple dispute, no journalists able to get anything from the Thai’s side. Just about everything we’d heard or seen is from the Cambodian’s side. What does it tell us? Obviously, the Thais have lots of things to hide.

Remember back in the 80s? They ran around cried like hell asking for international community to help them to fight with the Viet. A country like them had to hide behind to Khmer Rouge when came to real fighting. I love to blow them up with RPGs!!!

Seen the latest news from their one eyed king? The guy turned into gay (wore pink). LOL.
