Negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia over Preah Vihear have stumbled over the spelling of the name of the famed ancient temple.
A Thai official said yesterday officials of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission were trying to find a way around the problem so border negotiations could proceed.
Vasin Teeravechyan, who chairs the commission, said a solution acceptable to the two countries would be found.
Thailand insists on using “the Temple of Phra Viharn-Preah Vihear” on documents used in the negotiations. Cambodian officials strongly object, saying Preah Vihear is internationally accepted.
Mr Vasin, who is a retired Foreign Ministry official, said the name proposed by Thailand was very common in international negotiations on the issue.
The Temple of Phra Viharn-Preah Vihear has been approved by parliament for the framework negotiations with Cambodia. Thailand will use it in documents to be signed with Cambodia.
The meeting will be concluded today.
The two countries have been unable to settle on a plan to reduce troops in the disputed area which covers 4.6 square kilometres between Kantharalak district in Si Sa Ket and the Cambodian province of Preah Vihear.
Mr Vasin refused further comment on the issue. But earlier he said Cambodia had told the meeting it had no soldiers stationed in the area.
The Cambodia delegation is led by Senior Minister Var Kim Hong.
Despite the disagreement over the name of the temple, the two countries will set up another team to survey the borderline for demarcation between Nam Yuen district in Ubon Ratchathani and Phu Sing district in Si Sa Ket, which is 195km long.
Thailand and Cambodia have already formed a survey team to study the disputed area near the ancient temple which was the scene of a military clash last year.
A plan to reduce the number of soldiers near the disputed area is expected to be included in talks when Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan visits Phnom Penh on Friday.

Even though Thailand has seized much of Khmer territories in the past, I can forgive them if they would look to a brighter future. Its easy for us Khmers to say lets take back Surin, Buriram, and Sisaket through force, but after looking at the pictures of captured Thais, they look like Khmer brothers, Khmer uncles, Khmer fathers, and Khmer sons. Looking at their faces, it reminds me how ugly war is. It’s not their fault their government forced them. I wish the Thai society would change it’s biased history lessons that they have taught generation after generation. If they taught TRUE HISTORY we would not have this problem of CENTURIES ANIMOSITY. I understand Cambodia MUST protect the remaining provinces at all cost. I think what is happening is that Thailand is fearing the rise of Cambodia’s ECONOMY. It has the fastest growing economy in ASIA. Not the biggest, but the fastest growing. International investors are already saying Cambodia will rival Thailand very soon if stability endures. Once Cambodia rises from poverty and enters the capital world, it’s military will grow simultaneously and it becomes a bigger player in South East Asia. Thailand and Cambodia are the two closest civilizations in the world. We share the same religion and culture. Our physical appearance is strikingly similar. We are only separated by language and BORDER. I hope one day BURMA, CAMBODIA, THAILAND, and LAOS will ERASE all the Borders and rename it Sovannaphum. The name our ancient South Indian ancestors knows us by. Sovannaphum, Land of Gold, rich in culture and the people. I love Khmer, I love Kampuchea/Cambodia, but I think uniting our Indic people will serve a greater cause.

It’s only been 20-30 years ago and you can’t even get your facts right. The Thais did NOT have F16s at the time. It’s only after they were scared of the Viets would have Mig-23s that they begged the US to sell them the F16s.
Without the support of the west and especially the Chinese hold back the Viets from the northern front that really saved the Thais from being wiped out by the Viets for supporting the Khmer Rouge back in the 1980s.
The Thais should consider that they’re a lucky country. In the past, 14-18th centuries without Vietnam civil wars and constant Chinese threats from the north, the Viets and Burmeses would have roasted the Thais already.
If you know your history, then you should know the Thais got badly bashed by the Viets under Rama I in the late 1700s (look up wikipedia).
You may be trained and armed by the US but you have no combat experience in the past 100 years. Other words, you’re just a paper tiger!
Once you’re F16s are blown out of the sky, you’ll be left to fight on the ground. The Khmer can take on you 1-1 easily. SAMs only cost USD 1 million each at the max, how much you think F16 will cost? Can you maintain a war if F16s are kept blowing out of the sky?
How come you Thais don’t have any disputes with the Burmese? Because you wouldn’t dare to. Only picking on little countries like Laos and Cambodia.
If the Thais are smart then they better back down. If war is broke out with the Khmers, the Muslims in the south will be armed. Thailand will be self-destructed by internal and external forces. The Khmers will have a chance of their lifetime to take back the land they lost to the Thais. Thailand will be splitted up into 3. Southern Thailand will be an independent country. After go through you discussions. Why Would Thai PM reject International assistance on border PreahVihear.. Does it mean Thai have something to hide ?
This question is for Micheal. One of your statement had mentioned that Thai could invade Cambodia so easy. I don’t agree with you on this case base on two things:
- Thai has no objective on take over Cambodia.
- Thai Soldiers could not handle the fight with Cambodia Soldiers. As you could see the last two fights; Cambodia always captured a few Thai special force. This show the lack of experience, lack of courage and lack of motivation, even though, they have better weapons.
This border thing is just a Bangkok political game. Yellow shirt wanted to get rid off Red Shirt from power by creating a crazy story about border and temple. Once they won and got into power, they wanted to unit between the two parties (Red – Yellow shirt) by invading Cambodia land.
